Strike seeking district status for Jiribam paralyzes life

Life came to a grinding halt in the remote Jiribam sub-division, bordering Assam, for the last couple of days owing to a whooping 60-hour general strike called by a local pressure group in pursuit of its long-standing demand to upgrade the area to a full-fledged revenue district.
Business establishments and government institutions were also closed due to the bandh, local sources said adding that irate supporters of the Jiribam District Demand Committee (JDDC) burnt effigies of Okram Ibobi Singh and set ablaze tyres on the roads.
