Slain personnel victims of Naga factions’ turf war
Times of India | Oinam Sunil | TNN | Jun 7, 2015, 05.14 AM IST
Thursday's deadly ambush killing 18 Army personnel at Paraolon in Manipur's Chandel district is no doubt a failure of intelligence-gathering, but it also has a connection with militants' involvement in the Autonomous District Council (ADC) election in the hill districts.
As the cadres of NSCN-IM, which is in peace talks with the Centre, were supporting Naga People's Front (NPF) candidates, NSCN-K cadres were seen opposing everything their rivals did and asking voters to not vote for NPF.
The involvement of tribal militants — both Nagas and Kukis — in the ADC polls is an open secret. During campaigning, there were reports of NSCN-IM rebels bashing up Congress workers, while some Kuki militants thrashed villagers who did not support Congress candidates.
