- Book by Waikhom Manimohon Singh -
Prof Moirangthem Rajendra Singh *
First of all, my heartiest salutations to one and all.
Friday, August 29 (4th Langban) was a very auspicious day coinciding with Shree Ganesh Chaturthi. The day also witnessed the launching of the book entitled Shree Jaganath Sahashranam Stotram compiled by Shri Waikhom Manimohon Singh, at the office chamber of Director, IPR Govt of Manipur with Shri P Bharat Singh, IAS (Retd) as Chief Guest, Shri A Chitreswor Sharma, Sahitya Academy Awardee & Shri W Rajen Singh, Director, IPR as special guest and host respectively.
The inaugural speech was given by Shri S Gouramani Sharma, Pancharatna, Shree Shree Govindajee Brahma Sabha, Manipur. With the blessing of the Lord of the universe Shree Jaganath, I was able to attend this function as an invitee.
It brought to light the writer’s futile search for a book containing this Shree Jaganath Sahasranam within the spiritual circles of the state, now one day, he unexpectedly came across a cassette containing this recital in a shop, and after buying it how he introduced it to his close friend, Dr Dhanendrajit and requested him to translate this recital into the Devnagari and Bengali scripts which was heartily agreed along with his referral to Shri Takhelchangbam Amusana Sharma for further review, who attended to this with his heart & soul which ultimately led to the publication of this book.
In the foreword to this book, Shri Amusana Sharma, Shastri, Sahitya Shiromani, Shiksha Shastri also explains the translation of Shree Jaganath Sahasranam from the Uriya script to the Devnagiri script. It also mentions how the writer, in search for better accuracy requested Shri Rosalyn Smant Rai, a student at the Shree Jaganath Sanskrit University to send the Devnagiri translated version of this Sahasranam.
It also lauded the efforts of Dr Dhanendrajit, Ayurvedcharya and Oinam Heramot in penning down the Sahasranam after arduously listening to the cassette.
At the function, the Chief Guest, Host & Special Guest in their speeches also dwelt on the facts relating to the face of Balbadhra, Subadhra and Krishna (Jaganath) at the temple at Puri, and also the facts relating to the publication of this book.
With a lot of effort, this Stotram is expressed in Meetei Mayek, Bengali, Hindi & English. The title of the book itself is in these four languages. The name of Jaganath Jagabandhu is very popular in Manipur. These names are being chanted by devotees and followers every year at the Kang Chingba.
Kang Chingba is celebrated not only at Shree Govindajee at Manipur palace, Imphal but also, at various urban as well as rural areas. There is already a book entitled Shree Jaganath Upasna relating to Shree Jaganath, as also various other books in this topic.
There are also accounts of the origin of the Kang Chingba event in Manipur. We have also come across various books of Shree Jaganath Sahasranam Stotram.
Recently, this gap has been filled up by the efforts of our colleague Gurubhai Shri Waikhom Manimohan Singh in publishing this book. Apart from the Stotram, the book also contains many invaluable articles of wisdom. Shri Swami Sivananda’s teachings along with other spiritual teachings are also included in this compiled book.
I sincerely pray to the Lord of this universe, Shree Jaganath to bestow his blessings to the writer.
At present the three idols of Shree Shree Jaganatha, Valbadhra and Subhadara at Shree Shree Govindajee Temple was carved out of a mango tree at Heibok Ching, Langthabal, Canchipur (Manipur University Campus) in 1832 at the behest of the Maharaja Gambhir Singh, 1825 — 1834.
In relation to this, a Brahmin was brought from Jaganath Kshetra at Puri, Orrisa for spiritual prayer and performance in the state.
