Security tightened in Manipur in view of I-Day boycott call

Security measures were today tightened in Manipur in view of the boycott call and general strike on Independence day by seven major insurgent groups in the state, police said. Frisking and checking of passers-by were conducted at various locations to intercept movement of ultras who might sneak into the capital complex here to disrupt the Independence day celebrations on Monday, they said
Seven major insurgent organisations--Revolutionary People's Front (RPF), Kanglei Yawol Kann Lup (KYKL), United National Liberation Front (UNLF), People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK), PREPAK (Progressive), Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP) and United People's Party of Kangleipak (UPPK)--in a joint statement had said they would boycott the Independence day celebrations saying Manipur had been "merged forcefully" with the Union in 1949 and also called a general strike on the day.
