Scrap AFSPA, help tourism: Manipur Tourism Policy Report (Draft)
- Draft policy proposes removal of army act from Manipur
- The Telegraph -
Khelen Thokchom | Imphal, May 16:
A draft Manipur tourism policy has proposed removal of the controversial Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958, and also the restricted area permit system to boost tourism in the state.
“While the department of tourism is acting on a new tourism policy for promoting tourism as an economic sector in the state, hurdles imposed by the restricted area permit and the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958, have to be removed,” the draft policy said, and added that tourists required a peaceful environment, free from the “uneasy presence” of armed forces.
The number of tourists, both foreign and domestic, has been increasing gradually during the past few years. But the prolonged economic blockade along Imphal-Dimapur highway by All Naga Students Association, Manipur reduced the number of domestic tourists last year, although the number of foreign tourists had increased.
The policy also said the tourism department should move the Centre to lift the permit system and vacate armed forces from tourist destinations.
