Rush of polluted river water into Loktak lake kills fish
The Telegraph | Khelen Thokchom | Sept. 5:
R.K. Sachimohon Singh of Ningthoukhong used to catch an average of 5-10kg of fish daily and earn almost Rs 10,000 per month by angling. However, that was one week ago.
Like Sachimohon, more than 10,000 fishermen, who depend on the Loktak lake for their livelihood, are now suffering because of a recent flood caused by heavy rains. The losses have run into lakhs of rupees and the state fishery department is yet to carry out a survey.
The water level of the lake receded after one gate of the Ithai barrage in Kumbi of Bishnupur district was opened. However, because of water pollution in the lake, fishermen have to bear the brunt.
Manipur annually produces 18.65 thousand tonnes of fish, according to the state forest department. Majority of the supply comes from Loktak lake.
