Red Cross rues aid curbs in region
The Telegraph | Imphal, July 14:
The International Committee of the Red Cross Society said it felt the need for humanitarian aid for victims of armed militancy in the Northeast, but could not intervene as it was not given permission by the Centre.
“The committee is allowed to carry on its activities only in Kashmir as there exists an international conflict between Pakistan and India. But we cannot do the same in the Northeast because the government considers the conflict here an internal problem,” John George, assistant co-operation delegate of the committee, Southeast Asian region office, New Delhi, said here today.
He said according to the 1960 Geneva Convention, the committee could work in countries having international conflicts.
