Imphal, April 4:
The residents of Samusang in Imphal West staged a protest against alleged harassment by a contractor in the area, marring the celebration of the Meiteis’ Sajibu Nongma Panba (new year day) this afternoon.
The contractor, identified as Tayenjam Subhash Singh, 45, who is also a film actor, allegedly threatened the residents with his licensed double-barrelled gun
The contractor has a licensed gun, but it was not found when the police broke open the house.
The residents of Thoubal, who erupted in anger yesterday against the death of a woman allegedly through firing by Assam Rifles personnel, today suspended the agitation in view of the festival.
The protesters accepted the body of the woman after the inspector general, Assam Rifles (south), C. A. Krishnan, assured the Thoubal joint action committee that a court of inquiry would be instituted and the guilty would be court martialled.
The assurance was given during a meeting attended by chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh, Krishnan, members of the Thoubal action committee and director-general of police Yumnam Joykumar Singh at the chief minister's conference hall this afternoon.
