Pressure group threatens strike over RPF leader's disappearance
Times of India | Aug 30, 2011, 02.37PM IST
A local pressure group has resolved to call a 24-hour statewide general strike beginning Thursday midnight in protest against the disappearance of a leader of the proscribed Revolutionary People's Front (RPF) which is fighting to restore Manipur's past sovereignty.
GM Changjou aka Gurumayum Jiteshwar Sharma aka Gypsy (49), the assistant publicity secretary of RPF, was picked up from a house by some people, believed to be army personnel, from Dimapur on August 18.
Changjou's wife has already made a fervent appeal to the government for ensuring his safety. The army's Red Shield Division has refuted a report published in a local daily that Chanjou was apprehended by its personnel. "No such person has been ever apprehended by the unit," said a statement of the unit.
Radha Devi, the mother of Changjou, said a lawyer and a family member were sent to Dimapur on August 20 to inquire into the matter. However, all police stations located near the spot from where Changjou was arrested said he was not handed over to them.
