Participants speak of uncertain future in Manipur meet on HIV
The Telegraph, | Imphal, July 13, 2011
Geeta (name changed), a 15-year-old HIV-affected girl, had lost her father to AIDS 11 years ago. Four years later, her mother, also HIV-positive, went to live with another man . Geeta and her three sisters are struggling to survive today. “I am on second line ART treatment. My father died in 2000. Mother left us four years later. We......,” she choked as tears welled up in her eyes.
Geeta was one of the five HIV-affected youths who shared their experiences in an interaction session, organised by Chennai-based World Vision India and Imphal-based NGO, People Living with HIV and AIDS, at the Manipur Press Club today.
Reni Jacob, the advocacy director of World Vision India, said, “The passing of the long-pending HIV and AIDS bill in its original form will contribute to reducing the epidemic and will also protect the rights of people with HIV, including children.”
NGO activists working with HIV and AIDS demanded that the government should set up a home exclusively for children affected with HIV.
