Finance minister P Chidambaram raised the allocation for the ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DONER) by nearly Rs 300 crore in the Union Budget on Thursday. He also proposed to get the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank to induce life into the Look East Policy, which has been in cold storage for long.
Chidambaram said, "Combining the Look East Policy and the interests of the northeastern states, I propose to seek the assistance of the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank to construct roads in the northeast and connect them to Myanmar." He also announced that a bill would soon be tabled in the Lok Sabha to declare the Lakhipur-Bhanga stretch of river Barak in the state as the sixth national waterway. The Brahmaputra has already been declared as a national waterway.
