Ningol Chakkouba celebrated in Manipur
Assam Tribune | Sobhapati samom | Imphal, Nov 13 -
Ningol Chakkouba, the festival during which sisters and daughters are invited for special feasts by their fathers and brothers, was celebrated in Manipur today.
The busy Khwairamband Keithel market here wore a deserted look during the day as most people had joined their families for the festival. ‘Ningol’ means both married and unmarried daughters and ‘Chakkouba’ means an invitation for a traditional lunch at the mother’s house. Thus, the festival is a special day for married daughters in Manipur.
On this day, a grand feast with various courses reflective of the local cuisine is prepared in honour of the daughter at her ‘mapam’ (maternal home). The main menu of most families includes different forms of fish curry.
