New Year brings 'promised land' nearer to 'lost tribe' in Mizoram
Seven Sisters Post | Zodin Sanga | Aizawl (Jan 3):
The New Year has given fresh hopes to the faithful members of the Bnei Menashe community in Mizoram and Manipur, who claimed to be descendents of one of the lost tribes of Israel, of their long-awaited ‘return’ to the ‘promised land’ as the Israeli government has given its nod to ‘aliyah’ or immigration.
A batch of 53 people from Manipur migrated to Israel on December 24, for the first time after five years of suspension of the immigration. Khiangte, who adopted the Jewish name as her maiden name after embracing Judaism, said there are about 7,000 Bnei Menashe, of which about 3,000 are from neighbouring Manipur, who are left to migrate to Israel to join an estimated number of 1,700 Mizo Jews who have already settled in Israel. She hopes all of them would ‘go home’ this time.
