Need to identify one's strength : Going beyond marks
- The Sangai Express Editorial :: June 18 2018 -
Again this is about students. Or rather about the numerous coaching centres that have cropped up in Imphal.
With CBSE declaring the results of NEET and the results of JEE, some coaching centres have gone to town highlighting the achievements of their students while the others which are not in the Big League, have gone about on a publicity blitzkrieg, highlighting what they deem are their unique features.
All acceptable and fine and students of Manipur today no longer need to look beyond the State to hone their skills and talents to appear in many of the competitive examinations that are opened to students who have passed the Class XII board examinations.
Competition amongst the institutions and offering special classes to students so that they crack some of the most competitive examinations after their Class XII board exams.
All these always come with freebies offered to the outstanding students thereby underlining the point that it is academic excellence that counts.
Apart from this, there is also the growing practise of representatives of the people encouraging the bright students with financial incentives at the Assembly Constituency level.
All these are positive outcomes of the intense competition that one sees all over the place and while this reflects the ground reality, it will also do good for all to seriously study the plight of students who managed just an average score.
And mind you what was deemed to be excellent in the years gone by may not even be mediocre or average today, given that students are delivering perfect tens, to borrow a parlance from the world of sports, particularly gymnastics.
A look at some of the Imphal based daily newspapers will lend weight to the observations made here.
Admission time for students who have crossed the Class XII level and in line with what has been happening in the past few years, a number of educational institutions based outside the State have also come to town offering the subjects/streams available with them, all with an eye on attracting the largest possible number of students.
As stated in an earlier commentary, this is where parents need to be on guard and do a double check on the institutions of their choice.
Check and verify whether the institution in question is recognised by the UGC and the All India Council of Technical Education.
Go through the profile of the past students of the said institution.
A little homework can go a long way in avoiding heart burns.
Encourage the students, guide them and make them realise their true potential.
Again parents need to be doubly aware of where the strength of their children lie, when it comes to the question of choosing what stream of study to pursue further.
Here it is important to acknowledge that it makes no sense to go along with the herd, for the strength of each student is different.
Recognise the strength of one’s child and accordingly guide him or her in the right direction.
It stands that a good engineer can never be a good doctor, while a good lawyer can never be a good doctor or a good engineer.
A bare fact that needs no elaboration.
Finding the strength of one’s child therefore needs an approach that should take one beyond the marks scored by the student in the examination.
