Nagalim demand to chart course of NE politics
Times of India | Oinum.Sunil | TNN | Aug 7, 2015, 06.30 AM IST
The demand for Greater Nagaland or Nagalim, which the Nagas call Naga integration, will dictate the future course of politics and insurgency in the three NE states of Manipur, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. Though NSCN (IM) has already dropped its demand for 'sovereignty', the bone of contention ever since the outfit signed a ceasefire agreement with the Centre in 1997 was its core demand for integration of contiguous Naga-inhabited areas under one administrative roof.
Union minister of state for home affairs Kiren Rijiju and Nagaland governor PB Acharya said the existing boundaries of NE states will not be touched by the peace accord and explained that the agreement is aimed at bringing overall peace to the northeast. But the assurances by these leaders have failed to convince the people in the three states as they questioned the Centre's lack of transparency in dealing with the issue. The worrying point is the fact that NSCN(IM) leaders insist that Naga integration will be part of the agreement.
