NSCNs turf war in Tirap; one dead
Eastern Mirror | Itanagar, MAY 27 (PTI):
Arunachal Pradesh’s Tirap district has been hit by a turf war between Khaplang (K) and Issac-Muviah (IM) factions of the NSCN that has left one insurgent dead. According to police sources, a cadre of NSCN-K was killed in a shootout between the rival factions on Wednesday night at Chasa village. Five days ago, a similar shootout took place at Luthong, a hamlet 15 kms away from Khonsa, the district headquarters on the way to Longding.
Already at loggerheads, both the rival factions of the NSCN have been waging a war against each other to gain control over the district and its resources due to the porous borders with Myanmar. The war intensified after the killing of the self-styled commander of the NSCN-K faction of Tirap Chippu Menon recently at Dimapur, the sources said.
Union Home Minister P Chidambaram, during his visit to the state in April last year, had said that security forces will not allow militants to carry on activities under the guise of ceasefire agreement in the districts. “The security forces would act if there are subversive activities in these districts,” he had said.
