Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the chief ministers of Northeast states ahead of the first meeting of the governing council of Niti Aayog in New Delhi on Sunday :: Pix - Hueiyen Lanpao
Chief ministers of the northeastern states today made a fervent plea to the Centre to enhance the role of the North Eastern Council (NEC) and aired apprehensions about alterations in financial assistance after the Planning Commission was replaced by Niti Aayog.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the Centre will "move away from one-size-fits-all" schemes and "forge a better match between the schemes and the needs of states". Modi also said the regional councils under Niti Aayog can catalyse joint projects across member states. However, there was no clarity on the future of the NEC, which is a statutory body and precedes the DoNER ministry.
The northeastern states are special-category states owing to their position geographically and strategically and this made it imperative for the Centre to pay special attention to the region in terms of financial assistance, Modi said.
