The Special Cell of Delhi Police has arrested a suspected member of a banned insurgent group of Manipur with 200 kg of ephedrine, a banned drug, worth Rs 20 lakh, at the IGI Airport on Saturday. The accused is identified as Napoleon, said sources.
Napoleon, in his mid-30s, reportedly works for banned outfits like the Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP) and Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL).
Officials said this was the biggest seizure of ephedrine this year. "Usually, northeast-based outfits extort money from politicians, government officials and businessmen to run their outfit. Now, they are into smuggling of drugs from across the border," said the officer.
Militants from northeast are often found hiding in the capital. In August last year, the Special Cell had arrested four members of the banned insurgent group, PREPAK (People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak), which is fighting for an independent homeland in Manipur. In December last year, two members of Manipur-based Kangleipak Communist Party (Military Council) were arrested in the city.
