Metal plates of bridge on NH-53 removed; counter blockade begins

In a bid to disturb movement of freight trucks on NH-53, three metal plates of a bridge on Irang river was found removed on Friday night amidst twin economic blockade on the national highways turned ugly Saturday when hundreds of womenfolk in Khubong area along Imphal-Jiribam section of NH-53 imposed counter-blockade.
The three metal plates on the Irang bridge at Taobam, some 98 km from Imphal was found removed Friday night by suspected blockade supporters of UNC when one of the trucks moving with security escort got stuck on the bridge.
However, after re-fixing the removed metal plates, the freight trucks proceeded to Imphal. Over 400 trucks including 104 oil tankers and 140 LPG laden trucks arrived Imphal late Saturday evening.
Womenfolk of Khumbong area launched counter-economic blockade on the NH-53 and a large number of womenfolk assembled on the stretch of the NH-53 around 10 am, preventing transportation of goods from Imphal to other places.
