Manipur has sought JICA (Japan International Co-operation Agency) assistance to a project “Augmentation of Water Supply for Imphal city by 45 MLD with raw water from Thoubal Dam,” an ambitious plan drawn up by the state government to meet the increasing raw water for its water supply schemes for city area.
The Planning Commission of India has approved Rs 687 crore proposal, an official in state planning department said, adding that Manipur government has sought JICA assistance under EAP (Externally Aided Project). Once the JICA agreed to fund the project, it would be the fifth project taken up in the state with foreign assistance under EAP, three projects being completed in the state under AP.
The fourth project, Manipur Sericulture Project (MSP) taken up with JBIC at an estimated cost of `490.59 crore is still going on, while MSP Phase-I has been completed at an estimated cost of `134.52 crores with `18.33 crores as state component, the Phase-II is yet to commence.
