Manipur royal family woman denied cop's job
Times of India | Saroj Kumar Sharma | TNN | Feb 21, 2013, 05.16 AM IST
A woman member of the Manipur royal family has been denied a police job for being an alleged sympathiser of the banned militant outfit, United National Liberation Front.
The Manipur government says Thounoujam Brinda, daughter-in-law of UNLF chairman Rajkumar Meghen, is a militant sympathizer and her association with the police will compromise security. Incidentally, Brinda's husband's great grandfather, Bir Tikendrajit, fought against the British in the 1891 Anglo-Manipur war, and was hanged by the British on August 13 the same year.
The day is still celebrated as "Patriot's Day" in Manipur. A road in New Delhi's Chanakyapuri is named after him, called, Bir Tikendrajit Road. One of the Manipur Bhavans in New Delhi is named after him as well, called 'Manipur Tikendrajit House'.
