Manipur rice production may fall short by 16% off target: Govt

Manipur’s rice production is likely to fall 16% short of the targeted production of 2015 on account of floods in some parts of the state, a top agriculture department official said Sunday. Over 31,773 hectares out of total 1,75,000 hectares of paddy field were damaged by the flood this year, said director of state agriculture department, Louis Ngasainou in an interview with a local cable network today.
Massive floods, of an unprecedented scale had inundated Manipur’s valley districts. It was the worst anyone had seen or recorded in the last 200 years. Floods and massive landslides affected seven of the nine districts of the state, Thoubal, Bishnupur, Imphal West, Imphal East districts that fall in the valley and Chandel, Ukhrul, Churachandpur districts that lie on the hills.
