Manipur politicians keen to offer rewards to toppers
Telegraph | Khelen Thokchom | Imphal, July 6:
Ministers and MLAs in Manipur are suddenly in a rush to reward meritorious students, giving one the impression that the state is experiencing a sort of revolution in the education sector.
MLAs and aspiring MLAs have been distributing cash prizes to toppers and meritorious students of their respective constituencies almost everyday since the results of High School Leaving Certification Examination and Secondary School Examination were declared recently.
Notably, the MLAs select meritorious students only from their respective constituencies to give away the awards, which include cash prizes ranging from Rs 500 to Rs 10,000. “I got three cash prizes from our local MLA L. Nandakumar Singh and two other persons. Altogether I received Rs 2,000 as award. I will also be getting more cash prizes from three other persons,” said Irengbam Angamba of Uripok constituency in Imphal West, who just passed Class XII.
“This is nothing but buying individual votes. Such acts would not make more meritorious students. We do not need one or two good students but want to make most bright and meritorious,” said professor Amar Yumnam, an economist with Manipur University.
