Manipur pays tribute to 1891 war heroes
Times of India | TNN | Aug 13, 2011, 10.51PM IST:
At a time when the restive state is reeling under a mild inflation following the Kuki economic blockade on national highways, Manipur on Saturday observed Patriots' Day to honour the heroes who made selfless sacrifice for the cause of their motherland during the 1891 Anglo-Manipuri War against the British.
Amid heavy security, the celebrations were held at Bir Tikendrajit Park in the capital in evening. Chief minister Ibobi Singh led people in paying tribute at Hicham Yaicham Pat here, where the last rites of Bir Tikendrajit were performed. On this day in 1891, Manipuri prince Bir Tikendrajit and General Thangal were hanged to death near historic Imphal Pologround on charges of waging war against the British empire. Tikendrajit had led Manipur against the British in the 1891 war.
The state government also observed Patriots ' Day at Manipur Tikendrajit House, New Delhi where Lok Sabha MP Thokchom Meinya led the VVIPs and public in paying floral tributes to the great patriots, an official statement, said.
