Manipur needs policies to combat drug abuse

International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was observed in different parts of Manipur on Sunday with a call to collectively participate in combating the menace.
Rallies were also organised in various parts of the state including an Auto-rickshaw rally in Imphal city which was flagged off by state Social Welfare minister N Loken, followed by a function at Imphal Palace Compound organised by social welfare department in association with NGOs working against drug abuses.
According to state social welfare department report, children and adolescents commonly abuse substances like tobacco and alcohol besides report on use of illicit and drugs like cannabis, opium, or even intravenous use of drugs including heroin.
The commonly abused drugs in the north eastern states include alcohol, tobacco, cough syrup containing codeine, cap spasmo-proxyvon (SP), volatile solvents etc. said director Seityabati of state Social Welfare Department.
