Manipur begins new year with highway bandh
Times of India | TNN | Jan 1, 2013, 11.20 PM IST
The new year in Manipur began with a bandh along the Imphal-Silchar highway. The bandh was called on Monday night in protest against an alleged fake encounter killing of a former Naga rebel by Assam Rifles troops.
Troops of the paramilitary force's 10 battalion gunned down the individual, who was a cadre of the Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF), in an alleged stage-managed encounter on Monday morning. The incident took place between Lamdangmei and Sangji in Tamenglong district.
Dangmei was killed in a fake encounter by the troops at 4.45 am on Monday, alleged K Pamei, state secretary of the Zelaingrong Students' Union Manipur (ZSUM). But the paramilitary force contradicted the allegation in its statement.
