Long Term Plan to beautify Loktak
The Telegraph | Imphal, July 24:
Loktak, the largest freshwater lake in the Northeast, may become one of the major tourist attractions of the region if the Ibobi Singh government sees through a plan to clean and beautify it and develop its surroundings.Cleaning of the 246sqkm lake is under way as part of a short-term plan for its beautification. A long-term plan to develop tourism infrastructure around the lake is also on the cards.
The task of clearing phumdis (floating biomass) from the lake began in January last year at a cost of Rs 373.9 crore as part of the short-term plan and will be completed in March 2013.
“After the short-term plan is completed, a long-term plan will be taken up,” the official said, adding that the government was thinking of engaging Wetlands International South East Asia, which prepared the short-term plan report, for reparing a report on the long-term project, too.
The 40sqkm Keibul Lamjao National Park on the lake is the only natural habitat of Sangai, one of the most threatened deer species in the world. The park is the only “floating” national park in the world. A 2004 census pegged the Sangai population there at 180. A IUCN red-listed animal, the Sangai was considered extinct till 1953.
