KEIBUL LAMJAO, the floating home of the brow-antlered deer on Loktak Lake, is the setting of this dramatic and poignant legend of the hunter Kadeng of Moirang. It is told from the point of view of the animal Sacred to the Manipuris, the sangai, the deer "that looks at you".
Thokchom Chaotombi's original 1984 choreography brings the environmentalism of M.K. Binodini Devi's script to life. The writer based Keibul Lamjao on her 1973 essay that
sparked environmental awareness in Manipur and made the sangai a cultural heritage of the land.
It is now the state animal of Manipur and the symbol of the annual tourism festival which is named after it.
PROF. NAHAKPAM ARUNA is Head of the Department of Manipuri Literature at Manipur University.
