Jiribam group rejects land claims of Zeliangrongs
Times of India | TNN | Aug 30, 2011, 02.50PM IST
At a time when the Centre and the state government have appealed to the Kukis to end their ongoing highway blockade seeking conversion of Sadar Hills into a full-fledged revenue district, another district demand group, formed by the people of Jiribam sub-division bordering Assam, has rejected the claims of the Zeliangrong (Naga) tribes over jurisdiction of land.
The Jiribam District Demand Committee (JDDC) said the claim of the Zeliangrong Baudi, the Zeliangrong Union and the Rongmei Council over some villages in Tamenglong were unjustified because the hamlets were still en-compassed by Jiribam. The JDDC has been seeking district status for Jiribam for several years.
At present, the sub-division, inhabited by various communities, including the Meities, is under the administrative jurisdiction of Imphal East.
