Imphal: 1.60 lakh voters to elect 27 councilors on Wednesday

About 1.62 lakh voters would exercise their franchise to elect 27 councilors of the Imphal municipal council on Wednesday, May 25 at about 250 polling stations, official sources said. Sources said there are altogether 72 candidates including women and all arrangements have been made for smooth conduct of the election.
They said all the 27 councilors would be elected from different wards located in the assembly constituencies of Wangkhei, Yaiskul, Sagolband, Uripok and Singjamei--all in Imphal town. At least 12 police personnel supported by homeguards would be deployed at each polling station, sources said adding that there was no untoward incident during the weeks-long campaigning which ended at 4 p.m. on Monday (May 23).
Major parties which are contesting are Congress, BJP, CPI and others, party sources said.
