Ibobi govt to review unlawful religious institutions
- The Telegraph -
Imphal, May 12:
The Manipur government has accelerated steps to demolish unauthorised religious structures constructed in public places across the state.
An official source said chief secretary D.S. Poonia presided over a meeting of deputy commissioners and officials of the revenue department on May 4 to examine a list of unauthorised temples, churches, mosques and gurdwaras constructed in public places.
Official sources said there were frequent conflicts among religious groups over construction of religious buildings in various localities and the conflicts had even led to attacks on the institutions.
Imphal West alone has 33 such constructions while Imphal East has 36.
In fact, a godown of the food and civil supplies department was converted into a Church by residents in the district headquarters of Ukhrul in October 2005. The district authority has been asking the church body to shift the institution to a new site provided by the district administration.
