I-Day peaceful in Manipur amidst insurgents' boycott
Nagaland Post | Imphal , Aug 13
Independence Day celebration across Manipur was peaceful amidst tight security arrangements to foil any untoward incidents likely to come from insurgents boycotting the day by calling a 17.30-hour general strike. Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh unfurled the tricolour flag at the parade ground of the 1st Manipur Rifles Battalion.
Thirty-six contingents of BSF, CRPF, Manipur Rifles, state armed police, state police, home guard, fire service, NCC cadets, schools and colleges students participated in the parade. Speaking on the occasion, chief minister O Ibobi Singh reiterated that government would not take any hasty decision with regard to conversion of Sadar Hills into a full-fledged district of the state.
“The demand for district status for Sadar Hills and Jiribam is reasonable but it needs a wide spectrum deliberation”, he said. However, Ibobi maintained that government has put in place all the require infrastructures of being a district in these two sub-divisions and government offices and also taken up developmental works.
