Hill farmers in NE 'high' on opium poppy cultivation
Seven Sisters Post | Abhijit Deb | Guwahati (Jan 10):
According to the Central Bureau of Narcotics (CBN), villagers residing in the valley areas of Senapati and Chandel districts in Manipur and Lunglei district in Mizoram, who traditionally used to grow cannabis, are fast shifting to opium poppy cultivation — a trend which the authorities termed as “alarming and dangerous”.
Despite several initiatives by the government to weed out illicit cultivation of opium poppy in the country, higher profit margins are luring villagers in the hilly tracts of the Northeastern region to move away from the traditional cannabis cultivation to the more lucrative opium poppy farming.
According to a rough estimate, approximately 200 to 300 hectares of fallow land are being bought under the opium poppy cultivation every year in each district. The trend is specifically on the rise in villages adjacent to the Myanmar border in Manipur and Mizoram.
