Headquarters 9 Sector popularly known as Headquarters Manipur Range is celebrating its 60th year of raising on 01 September 07. It is the oldest Range Headquarter of Assam Rifles and traces its genesis back to the year of Indian Independence, when it was raised as Joint Headquarters at Tuensang in Nagaland in September 1947. The role of this Headquarters then was to extend administrative control over remote tribal areas under extreme difficult conditions with only rudimentary administrative backup. The Jawans bore all odds with exemplary fortitude and courage. The Sector was later re-designated as Headquarters 1 Sector in May 1956 and placed under command Headquarters GOC Assam (now 23 Infantry Division). The Sector Headquarters moved to Ukhrul in June 1968 and was re-designated as Headquarters 3A Sector and placed under command Headquarters 8 Mountain Division. The Sector Headquarters moved to Leimakhong in Sep 1971 and later moved to Kangla Fort in July 1972.
The Sector was re-designated as Headquarters Manipur Range in July 1973 and subsequently re-designated as Headquarters 9 Sector in November 1979. The Sector Headquarters moved out from Kangla in August 2004. After a brief stay at Mantripukhri it moved to the present location Keithelmanbi in December 2004. Since raising the Sector has treaded a long path of glorious history to its present recognition.
