Go to Village Mission : Another first for Govt
- The Sangai Express Editorial :: May 03 2018 -
Another first. After Meeyamgi Numit, Hill Leaders’ Day and the number of schemes that have been launched in the State, it is now Go to Village Mission.
The BJP led Government under Chief Minister N Biren seems to have got its priorities right so far and one hopes that the measures taken up are not reduced to something like playing to the gallery to earn some brownie points.
The new venture is perfectly in line with keeping touch with the people at the grassroots level and this is saying something a lot for far too long the Government or rather those sitting in the corridors of power, particularly the elected representatives, had given the impression that they are out of reach of the common people.
Hopefully the Go to Village Mission will open the eyes of the suited, booted class on how the people in general are living and help them prioritise things.
The new measure is also significant as it has become some sort of a culture for the elected representatives and the babudom to forget that their attention should be focused on the welfare of the people and if any one needs the welfare measures of the Government the most, it is the people living in the villages.
This is also in line with the thought propounded by retired teachers of apex colleges of Manipur some years back to have a Home Constituency for all the elected members.
There is practically no point for all the elected members to spend most of their time in Imphal and in the corridors of power, for their presence is very much needed at the place from where they were elected.
So go home was the sage advice of the retired teachers to all the elected representatives so that they are at least in touch with the people who elected them in the first place.
Go to the village, see and understand the plight of the people and then act accordingly so that the needs of the people can be looked into.
A first hand account of how people live in the village and apart from this, it will also give an opportunity to the elected members on how much of the different schemes floated by the Government have been actually implemented at the ground level.
This is the beginning but if the manner in which the new venture of the Government has gone down with the people is taken into consideration, it can and should yield positive results in the long run.
It is also important for the Government to keep in mind that just going to the village without any follow up action will render the Mission a failure.
The point is, go to the village, get a first hand account of the conditions of the people and then see how to take up corrective measures.
See how more effective the health care system can be at the village level.
How about the education of the young kids ?
Health and sanitation of the people at the village level will certainly go a long way in giving credence to the understanding of a welfare Government.
The task at hand is no doubt not simple, but efforts should be taken up for the real Manipur lies in the village and this is a point that should not be forgotten.
