Global Day of Actions to Halt Humanitarian Crisis in Kachin state, Burma
Date : 9th June 2012
Venue : Jantar Mantar, New Delhi
We, the Kachin Community in New Delhi along with Burmese democracy activists are staging a peaceful protest demonstration demanding to immediately put an end to the humanitarian crisis that has been happening in our homeland Kachin State in Burma.
This protest is a part of a series of actions around the world calling for an end to the humanitarian crisis in Kachin State. These actions are being organized to mark one year since fighting broke out between the Burma Army and the Kachin Independence Army on 9 June.
The Burmese Army has been continuously committing human rights violations such as burning villages, forced displacement, rape, forced labor, torture and killings. There are around 75,000 people who have become internally displaced persons, living in squalid conditions with nowhere to go and no access to assistance from local or international aid organizations.
We, Kachin Community and Burmese democracy and rights activists call;
o to take immediate appropriate actions to end the Tatmadaw’s attacks on Kachin people and to protect civilians.
o to immediately allowing access to humanitarian aid from both national and international organizations to internally displaced persons.
o to immediately initiate a meaningful political dialogue with the Kachin Independence Organization and the people of Kachin State in order to achieve sustainable peace and address the issue of equality and democracy for ethnic people.
A letter to the president calling for an immediate end to the armed conflict, human rights violations and resulting humanitarian crisis in Kachin State, Burma will be submitted to Myanmar Embassy in New Delhi. The letter is endorsed by Kachin organizations and communities around the world, as well as regional and international civil society organizations.
Therefore, we would like to request you to kindly send a news reporter and photo journalist in support of restoration of peace and human rights in Kachin state in Burma. Around 100 Burmese will be joined the protest.
