The police and security forces are in a position to clear in six months the Loktak, the biggest natural fresh water lake in the North-East, of militants who have been bivouacking in floating camps, according to Manipur Director-General of Police Yumnam Joykumar. He said this while welcoming eight militants who had surrendered here with weapons.
Clearing of the water plants and bio-mass is progressing. Thus it would be possible to drive out the militants, he said.
Moreover, the police are getting cooperation from the public as the militants, who had no ideology, are resorting to extortions and other crimes, the DGP said.
A few years ago, an outlawed outfit was holding a news conference in a floating camp when an alarm was set off warning that some police personnel were sighted. Within minutes, hundreds of armed cadres showed up from all corners of the lake in canoes.
