Of FIR and counter FIRs : Eyes now on K Yugindro
- The Sangai Express Editorial :: October 13 2018 -
With former Chief Secretary Jarnail Singh formally taking over as the Administrator of MU with all the powers of a regular VC, normalcy may be expected to return to the varsity in the coming days.
The interesting point now however is, what awaits Professor K Yugindro ?
This poser is being raised against the backdrop of the fact that two complaints have been filed with Singjamei police station, seeking to lodge counter FIRs against the former Pro VC.
And it may not end with the two complaints already filed with the police as more students are reportedly lining up to file similar complaints.
The heat must surely be on for the former Pro VC.
Interesting to note that apart from challenging the FIR filed against them by Professor K Yugindro, the two students have given blow by blow account of where they were when the Pro VC was allegedly held captive inside the university by some teachers and students on September 20.
It was on the basis of the FIR filed by Professor K Yugindro that the infamous midnight raid of MU by security personnel was launched on September 20 and the operations reportedly extended to the wee hours of September 21.
Midnight raid and as the term suggests it was not just a search of the hostels for what followed were plain mayhem with the cops firing tear gas shells, thereby violating the sanctity of a place of learning.
The dust and smoke from the tear gas shells are yet to settle down as testified by the complaints filed at Singjamei police station, seeking counter FIRs against Professor K Yugindro.
How things unfold will be extremely interesting to watch, but here is hoping that nothing develops that may derail the efforts being taken up to put MU on track again.
How fast the police station concerned takes up the counter FIRs as sought by the two students remains to be seen, but more such students can come forward and herein lies the question of how Professor K Yugindro named the two students in the FIR.
Or were the names randomly picked by the Professor ? Or was the Professor advised to name all the students and teachers in the FIR ?
Tough to believe that Professor K Yugindro would have been able to remember all the names of the teachers and the students named in the FIR.
The best course of action left before the Professor would be to withdraw the FIR.
Similarly the students who have been allegedly wrongly named may withdraw their complaints.
Withdrawing the FIR is an acceptance that what was filed earlier is wrong and accepting this point should be enough for the ‘wronged’ students to forgive and forget.
Clearly the ghost left behind by AP Pandey has left a trail of destruction and this should obviously raise the question of who gave him the long rope to wreak such a nuisance at MU.
This is a point which will not be forgotten in a hurry, especially the students and teachers of MU.
How the BJP led Government at Imphal go about soothing the hurt psyche of the people, particularly the students, remains to be seen, but no one will forget that AP Pandey is a man deemed to be close to the power centres at New Delhi.
It is this close proximity to the power centres that the MU impasse was allowed to fester for such a long period.
