Experts to inspect Barak bridge
The Telegraph | Silchar, July 21:
The Union ministry of surface transport and highways has put on hold the repair of the 472-metre Barak bridge here, as it has decided to send technical experts from New Delhi to inspect it.
The Centre had granted Rs 6.60 crore in May for the repair of the bridge, which links Silchar with Kumbhirgram airport, which is about 25km from this town, a large number of tea gardens and Manipur, which is about 50km east of this town.
The load-bearing capacity of this bridge has reached its optimum with an average of over 300 vehicles crossing it daily. Senior officials of PWD (national highway division) said the cantilever bridge, which was open to traffic in 1966, had developed “fatigue” and become weak.
