Campaign for govt schools by AMSU
The Telegraph | Wednesday , July 27 , 2011
The influential All Manipur Students Union has launched a campaign to restore the past glory of the state’s government schools that are losing students every year. The campaign, named Transformation of Education System in Government Schools, began on July 23 with a one-day discussion programme for teachers, parents, students and elected members of rural local bodies at Praja High School in Imphal West.
The performance of government schools has been “dismal” in matriculation examinations in the past few years. None of the government school candidates could secure a place on the merit list till this year. Only one student from a government school was in the top 10 this year, after many years.
As part of the campaign, the students’ union demanded that no private schools should be allowed to come up within a 3km radius of government schools. It also demanded that ministers, MLAs and government employees should send their children to government schools. “During our campaign, we will build public opinion and place our demand before competent authorities to correct and improve the system,” Suresh said.
