- War-like situation in state, Centre tells SC
The Telegraph | New Delhi, Dec. 9:
The Centre told the Supreme Court today that a "war-like situation" was prevailing in the insurgency-affected areas of Manipur with several "home-grown groups" colluding with anti-national forces to secede from India. It also rejected the charge that the army was engaged in cold-blooded murder of innocents.
Putting up a vehement defence of the armed forces, attorney-general Mukul Rohatgi told a bench of Justice Madan B. Lokur and Justice U.U. Lalit that the army was fighting an "enemy" and its personnel had no "third choice" other than apprehend or kill such secessionist forces, or face punishment, including death under the Army Act.
