Blockade-induced scarcity prompts people to turn to the pedal
The Telegraph, | Khelen Thokchom | Imphal, Aug. 23:
A blockade-induced fuel crisis is forcing people in Imphal to pull out the good old bicycle from the backyard and ride to work, egged on by the city’s bicycle club.
Manipur has been facing a severe shortage of all commodities, including petrol and diesel, after two separate blockades were enforced along Manipur’s three supply lines by the Sadar Hills District Demand Committee and United Naga Council.
If the fuel crisis is the trigger, the Manipur Cycle Club, formed in January, has been a catalyst in mobilising the bicycle rage. The common concern, however, is the “risk” of being hit by vehicles on the busy Imphal streets.
“Well, we are now campaigning for a cyclists’ lane. We will soon be submitting a memorandum to the chief minister in that regard,” Mayengbam said.
