Attending to homeless lady : Exquisitely humane
- The Sangai Express Editorial :: December 29 2018 -
This is exquisitely humane.
And it stands out in stark contrast to the hate words levelled against the media in connection with the detention of Kishorchandra Wangkhem, the road rage in which a young man was so non-chalantly gunned down plum in the middle of Imphal and the mass rally held at Churachandpur to demand the release of a worker, who has been abducted for ransom.
And this is undoubtedly what gives one hope in the innate goodness of mankind and yes to the Babudom too.
It was with a reason why The Sangai Express came out a with a five column anchor news story on how MAHUD Department picked up a homeless lady from under the BT Flyover between Paona Keithel and Thangal Keithel and admitted her to RIMS.
The kindness of mankind did not stop there for volunteers of Believers Church, Langol have reportedly come forward to look after the said lady as long as she is under treatment at RIMS.
Other than the impoverished lady, one character who has stood out in the ‘exquisitely humane’ story is Joint Director of MAHUD, Dr Mayengbam Veto, who personally led a team of officials from MAHUD and picked up the lady from the street and admitted her to RIMS.
Details of the lady are yet to come in, but from what can be culled so far, the notice of MAHUD and the young officer was drawn after the matter was reportedly highlighted to them by a reporter of another English daily and this is where one can see the full chain of goodness forming a beautiful pattern.
This is what gives all hope in the goodness of mankind, despite the power play and the below the belt politics being played out to get nearer to the power centres.
The lady has been taken care of and this where one needs to acknowledge the Deen Dayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Urban Livelihood Mission.
Perhaps this is also the right time to remind all not to be so immersed in oneself that one cannot see the suffering/misfortune of others.
If the condition of the lady had not been highlighted to the MAHUD officials and if the MAHUD officials had not responded promptly, the story of the lady could have been very different.
God forbid, but to all those engaged in the profession of gathering news and bringing them to the doorsteps of the readers every morning, if not for the said reporter and timely response from MAHUD, it could well have been a case of a news of the lady landing up in daily newspaper as another unidentified body found at the commercial areas of Imphal.
This is what is moving and this is what should give all time to digest the news, understand the finer nuances of the news story and strive to be more sensitive to others and to what is happening.
This observation is made in the backdrop of the fact that the lady in question here could have been lying there under the flyover for days before her state was brought to the notice of MAHUD.
This obviously cannot be the end of the story and The Sangai Express will be on alert to come out with follow up stories of the lady and if at all there is a story to be learnt then it is that the Government has policies to look after such unfortunate citizens and it is just that officials need to be more sensitive to the plight of the less fortunate citizens.
