Assam Rifles likely to continue Myanmar border vigil
Times of India | TNN | Aug 5, 2011, 12.13AM IST:
The Assam Rifles is likely to continue with its vigil on the Indo-Myanmar border, despite talks of the BSF replacing the oldest paramilitary force in this frontier, Assam Rifles director general Lt Gen Rameshwar Roy hinted.
Dwelling on the proximity to the border where Assam Rifles posts can be set up, Roy quipped, "It will depend on the infrastructure development. As the roads keep on developing to the border, we will keep on going closer. We cannot sit in the jungles. It does not solve the problem."
The Assam Rifles was entrusted with the responsibility of guarding the border with Myanmar in 2002 when the strength of the force was 30 battalions only. Gradually, the strength of the force was increased to 46 battalions, while 20 more battalions are being raised currently.
