An academy to protect, preserve and propagate Manipur’s traditional theatre form, Shumang Leela, is coming up, as it faces the threat of losing its unique status following structural changes over the years.
“The training programme is part of an exercise to establish the academy. The aim is to make Shumang Leela a national theatre form and ultimately introduce Manipur’s culture and rich heritage to the international community through the traditional art form,” Wareppa Naba, project director of the training programme and director of Theatre Mirror, said.
Naba said invasions by Korean culture and Bollywood and Hollywood art forms had eroded the traditional form of Shumang Leela, adding that there was an apprehension that the future generations would never know about the original form if the current trends continued.
“The academy will have a proper syllabus, that will include comparative studies of western and eastern theatre forms and their history. An expert committee would be formed to compile the syllabus,” Naba, who is also the chairman of the academic sub-committee of the council, said.
