AJYCP activists block road against Naga atrocities at Merapani
Times of India | Aug 31, 2011, 08.19AM IST
Hundreds of activists of Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad's (AJYCP) district unit on Tuesday blocked the Assam-Nagaland road in the Mariani area to protest against the Nagas' atrocity on people at Merapani in Golaghat district.
AJYCP president Siva Kalita said, "Despite repeated pleas to the government to take steps on the rising incidents of border conflicts, the government has turned a blind eye to it. As a result, a group of Nagas hacked one Assamese businessman to death in the Bhandari area of Nagaland recently. Moreover, both Nagas and Naga militants attacked Assamese villagers in the Upper Merapani area of Golaghat and hundreds of families had to leave their houses and take shelter at Merapani police station. They even burnt down a house of an Assamese."
On the other hand, a joint committee of 12 organizations in Golaghat has expressed resentment over the government's inactivity on the prevailing situation. It has decided to impose an indefinite economic blockade if their demands were not met.
