65.7 pc Manipur households depend on forest
Assam Tribune | Sobhapati Samom | Imphal, Jan 7
More than half of Manipur households are still dependent on forest for their livelihood, according to the recently released CensusInfo India report. More than 65.7 per cent of the total households (5,07,152) in the State use firewood for cooking as well as a source of income by selling it in the market, according to the census data on houses, household amenities and assets in 2011.
Ninety-two per cent of Tamenglong district’s 24,477 households use maximum firewood among the nine districts while Imphal West district has 52.1 per cent. The report, which was released here at a seminar organised by the Directorate of Census Operations on Saturday, show only about 29.7 per cent people in the State have LPG connections, compelling them to search alternative fuel sources.
