Imphal, August 18: State president of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Meinam Bhorot described as discriminatory distribution of relief materials to flood affected people of worst hit Imphal East and West, Thoubal and Bishnupur districts.

Talking to media-persons today at the Old Lambulane office of the party, Bhorot said even though the present Government had details on the gravity of flood situations rescue and relief operations were confined to areas having Ministers and MLAs in the Secular Progressive Front Government.

Substantiating the charges, Bhorot said people in more severely affected areas disclosed that relief materials were concentrated in areas where near and dear ones of the Government MLAs and Minister reside.

Even though some relief measures were initiated in areas beyond their vote banks only rice was distributed while people were denied the much needed salt, dal and kerosene oil.

With procuring kerosene becoming a arduous task through official procedures, supplying candles to the affected people will be better option for the Government, the BJP leader added.

Continuing his scathing remark, Bhorot lamented the fact that Govt followed rescue act only after 17 Assam Rifles personnel evacuated over 100 marooned persons from Lilong areas.

Had Assam Rifles not jumped into the act precious lives would have been lost, he added.

Considering the likely outbreak of water borne diseases, Government will be wise to establish medical camps, he said.

Replying to queries on Central Government assistance, the MLA from Thangmeiband assembly constituency said, the party had already apprised central leaders on the matter but it is State Government responsibility to procure necessary funds.

He also expressed concern that the State is likely to face shortage of food grains with over 40-50 thousand paris of paddy plantations out of 1 lakh submerged under flood waters.

Locally produced paddy varieties are also likely to vanish from markets asking Government to supply the same for re-plantations as State farmers usually sow paddies uptil Jhulon festival, he added.
