EC rules out poll re-schedule

Imphal, April 10: Election Commissioner N Gopalaswamy today said that there "did not seem" to be any need for rescheduling the Lok Sabha election in Manipur as demanded by political parties in view of militant threats in the State.

Gopalaswamy told reporters here that he had to consult the CEC and the other Election Commissioner before arriving at a final decision, but what he gathered after speaking with his colleagues over phone in New Delhi today was "there does not seem to be any need for rescheduling the poll".

"I need to find out what is going on in New Delhi.

The Manipur chief secretary is in Delhi discussing the issue with the authorities," he said.

Militant groups in Manipur have called for a 'ban' on all electoral activities by the BJP and the Congress, and also 'disallowed' campaigning, election meetings, meet the press programmes of candidates.

On the fate of two lakh �D� category voters with doubtful Indian citizenship being denied voting rights for the last 10 years in Assam, the EC said, it was for the Tribunals for Illegal Migrants Determination to decide their status.

For the electors without voter photo identity cards, he said, besides the stipulated documents, identification by village headmen and polling agents would be acceptable.

On the Attorney General shooting down the EC plea for ban on exit polls, Gopalaswamy said, the Election Commission had to consider his opinion.
