Imphal, July 27: Two suspected UG cadres were shot dead by a combined security force during a reported encounter that took place near an oil pump located at Hiyangthang along Mayai Lambi under Wangoi police station tonight.

The encounter took place at about 8.15 pm when a combined force of Imphal West commandos and troops of 32 Assam Rifles were checking commuters along Mayai Lambi as a part of the enhanced vigil against kidnapping children.

A red car (Santro) bearing registration number AS-01/AD 6889 reportedly rode by the two slain UG cadres and one AK 56 rifle were recovered from the encounter site, informed a police source.

The encounter ensued when the suspected UG cadres opened fire in response to the signal of the combined force to stop the car, added the source.

UGs arrested : Personnel of 5 Assam Rifles have arrested two hard-core PREPAK cadres from Rongpur, Silchar, Cachar district, Assam yesterday and handed over them to Rongpur Police Station on the same day, reports our Jiribam correspondent.

The arrested cadres have been identified as corporal Gogelchandra alias James and Pvt Manocha, both failing from Moirang, Manipur.

One 9 mm pistol with four live rounds of ammunition have been recovered from their possession.

The arrested duo confessed that they have been carrying out extortion activities between Jiribam and Silchar.
